Bento #40

This is a no pride bento I made yesterday. I am just posting this for the sake of documentation.

Self Discipline

Do you know what is self discipline?

It is resisting the urge to buy TWO bento boxes in an evening!

I saw a yellow Elmo bento box in Kids Mall for only $9.50. VERY tempted to buy. And a Strawberry Shortcake bento box for only $7.90!

For some reason, I found the strength to resist pulling my wallet out from my bag.

Hooray!! I do have some self discipline afterall!

Bento #37, #38

Bento #37 was my breakfast. I opened a can of sardine and used the tomato sauce for my pasta and saved one sardine for Bento #38. Again, being a lazy cook, I just heated up the sardine without adding onion (which I took out from my fridge and put it back due to laziness), chilli (which I dont have) and lime (I dont have too). The fishy taste was too much for me to bear.

Bento 38: Clement's breakfast. It was sardine and Ramly Fish Patty sandwich complete with butterhead and cucumber. How come I didn't think of using my cookie cutters to cut out shapes for the bread huh?

Bento #36

Once upon a time, there was a lousy cook who was really lousy at estimating the amount of food to buy and the amount of food to cook. She always over-bought and over-cooked.

One day, the lousy cook found a packet of fishballs which was about to expire in her well stocked up fridge. Without much hesitation, she boiled the fishballs and dolled up the fishballs and tried to form a "Fishball and Friends" choir.

Besides forming the choir, she decided that perhaps a fishball pop group would be popular too. So here are the "Fishy WishyBall", the latest teenage pop group.
So you can see, this cook was not only a lousy cook, she was also a very lame person.

The End.

Bento #35

Bento #35:

What didn't work:
(1) I wanted to make a pink hello kitty shaped egg but (a) I put too much colouring that it became redder than those eggs dyed to celebrate babies' full month (b) egg is too small although I bought 65g ones as suggested by Meekfreek. Follow up action: don't buy eggs from Shop and Save.

(2) This is what I call perserverance. I attempted to make bread roll again. The rolling of the bread is still as horrendous as the previous ones.

What worked:
(1) Cutting away the sides of the bread do make a difference (but ruined by my terrible rolling skills).

(2) Because of plain laziness, I conveniently boiled my egg in a shallow frying pan which happened to be lying on the stove. (Read: I didn't keep my utensils after I am done with the cooking) Only 3/4 of the egg is in hot water so I need to keep rolling the egg around the frying pan hoping to get it evenly cooked. I am not sure if it is because of this that the hard boiled egg is not hard even though I put it in the freezer compartment for chilling in the egg mould.

Bento #34

Since Jaimie has recovered from her fever and is still coughing with lots of phlegm, we are homebound today.

Lunch was just oatmeal for the little girl and I made fried udon for dinner. Jaimie was reluctant to try the udon at first but she liked it after her first bite. Instead of putting oyster sauce and other seasoning, I bought a packet of Lee Kum Kee ready-to-eat pork chop sauce and pour it over the udon, added in some water to half boil the udon so that the udon can soak up the seasoning. With big fire on the stove, the water evaporates in a while and the sauce is well mixed with the udon. Prior to that I stir fried some onions, carrots and roast pork and poured them over the udon before I turn off the fire. Clement says it tasted good. I can always count on my number one fan to give me some compliments for my horrendous cooking. :)

Jaimie finished the quail eggs, half the udon in the lunchbox, and rejected the cheese sausage.
Clement's dinner.

Bento #32, #33

After a super tiring day on Wednesday, I gave my bento a miss on Thursday because I simply couldn't wake up at all when the alarm clock went off. I felt something was missing yesterday. I think this is what you call "addiction".

This morning I woke up at 5.30am on the wrong side of the bed. I was feeling moody and sleepy. My bentos still turned out to be delicious despite of my foul mood. :)

Clement's bento:
The pork ribs were from BBQ Express. Pooh faced sandwich with teriyaki chicken fillet (also from BBQ Express) is nice! I added in some cucumber slices and I love the crunchiness of the cucumber and the juicy teriyaki chicken in my mouth. For vegetables, the usual broccolli, carrots and tomatoes. That was for Clement.

My breakfast bento:My lunch bento:
I saved the ribs for my lunch and tried to create a smiling face to cheer myself up. I was having another meeting while eating my lunch. The smiley face did help.

Bento #30, #31

Today is such a tiring day for me. I will tell you about my long and hard day. I woke up at 5.15am to make 3 bentos but I am only posting 2 of the pics here because the third one, which was my lunch, only consist of broccoli and cauliflower with a fish patty. Not worth taking up cyber space in blogger.

I wasted 2 slices of bread because silly me in my groggy and sleepy state at 5+am, placed the Ramily Fish Patty, lettuce and cucumber between 2 slices of buttered bread and then used the pooh mould to cut it.=_= Only when I couldn't press down the mould further then it occurred to me that I should have moulded the bread WITHOUT the sandwich! This pooh faced bread is for Clement.

When I reached school at 7.30am, I started to eat my pork floss bread roll and hash brown while marking compositions from yesterday's the mock exam.
Then I had lessons at 9-10am, followed by a meeting with my HOD till 12noon, and I needed to zoom off to another class from 12-1.30pm. When I ended my class at 1.45pm and went back to the staff room to eat my vegetables, I received a phone call from 2 students who graduated 5 years ago! They came to visit me in college. I was happy to see them but I was in a dilemma because I needed my break desperately. In the end, I chatted with them while eating my tasteless bento for 15mins and I needed to go for staff contact time. By 3.45pm when the contact time ended, I was having neck and backache. I was supposed to go for another meeting for another project but I told the chairman that I needed to be excused as I was about to die from fatigue. Eddie was so kind, as usual, to let me rest. It was raining cats and dogs but Violet, who was having a bad day too, and I, still took bus to Lot 1 for Sakae Sushi to destress. We had a 45mins dinner and rushed back to college at 5pm for our night study program duty. I continued marking until Clement and Jaimie came to college at 8.30pm. My duty was supposed to end at 9pm but Jaimie was running a high fever of 39.4 deg. I asked Violet to help me cover my duty so that I could bring Jaimie home. After feeding Jaimie her medicine, doing the laundry, taking my shower, I continued to mark the compositions till 10.45pm. Then I logged on my lappy to blog.

So, in case any of your friends made comments like "teachers work half a day" or "teachers only teach for ___hours a week", please help me to enlighten them.

Thanks in advance.

Bento #28, #29

I have been making not-so-exciting bentos lately. SIGH. Maybe I should wake up at 4am...NO!!!!!

I did bread roll for breakfast. It looks terrible but it tasted great. There were a variety of them in a box. (a) pork floss roll (b) nutella roll (c) egg with seaweed roll. Since I had some beaten egg left, I made an egg roll with seaweed. It looks good for deco (not for this messy bento, though). I didn't cut off the crust of the bread. That was a mistake. My bread was harder to roll and the sides were all cracked. Perhaps I should get those rectangle shaped bread or those nicely cut ones from Four Leaves. Will try and see how.

Bento #28-- Experiemental Bread Roll Bento.

I was going to have a long and busy day in school and I needed ccarbohydates so that I have enough energy to conduct my lessons today. Half a cup of rice makes 3 triangle onigiri. Those more expensive sausages taste much better and less saltish. There was an offer in Giant the other day and I bought some cheese sausage. YUMMY! I think I will not be a cheapskate and buy those frozen ones loaded with sodium anymore.

Bento #29 -- My lunch.

Clement had his IPPT today so he just had a bread bento. I didn't take a picture of his bento because the presentation was really bad. By the way, he passed his IPPT but he didn't get the $100 incentive because he missed the 2.4km run by TWO SECONDS! I should have made banana bread roll to give him a boost in energy, lah.

Bento #27

I woke up at 5.30am this morning and I was done with the cooking at 6.05am. I thought to myself, "Great! I will be able to leave the house at 6.30am!" In the end, a simple arrangement of the food took me 30mins! Ahhh~~~ Why? Why? Why? I couldn't even do any much decoration. I wanted to make my quails' egg wear the mushrooms as a hat but when I looked at the clock, forget it. Just dump everything inside the lunch box lah!

What's for brunch today? (1) Quail's egg x2 (2)broccoli (3) carrots (4)baked teriyaki mushroom (5) baked teriyaki chicken (6) seaweed flavoured rice. I overbaked the chicken. They became too dry. Next time I should just try baking for 15mins instead of 25min. I am too kiasi/kiasu.

The hello kitty bento box is mine. Clement confessed that everytime I packed his food in those cute boxes, he had to quickly open the cover and hide the cover under the box. Hello, Mister, do you know I am paying a lot for those cute prints on those boxes? You should proudly display them, not hide them! Hmmm.. come to think of it, if Clement packs my lunch (this is impossible in the first place) in a transformer lunchbox or ultraman (not the cartoonized version), I would hide the cover as quickly as I can too.

Fair enough.

So I bought this "unisex" bento box from Daiso on Saturday and I bought the matching chopsticks (has to be hello kitty, though), matching lunch bag and a matching bento belt for the macho man.
I packed a prune for each of us. It seems that prune is in season now because they are cheap and sweet!

Organising my Bento Tools

We went to Vivocity and inevitably I had to make a trip to Daiso. I was so happy to see tamago pan there because I couldn't find it in the IMM branch. I was even happier to see some really nice lunchboxes, only for $2, of course! I put all I wanted to buy in my basket because it was proven again and again that there was no use in resisting the urge to buy. I'll come back for them, and MORE, if I don't buy them NOW. Absolutfaith will be able to fully empathise with me.

Now I have a problem.

I do not have enough storage space! The cabinate I dedicated to put my bento tools and lunhboxes is about to explode. There is no way I can squeeze in one more lunchbox. I had to do something. No, I will continue my shopping but I need to reorganise my kitchen cabinates and create space for my bento stuff.

After spending an hour shifting the things from one cabinate to another, I am finally able to find space for everything.

1) Seperate containers for onigiri moulds, silicon dish cups, food picks, veggie cutters and nori punchers.

2) The little cabinate was meant to put canned food but I moved them elsewhere. This 4 tier storage box is now holding all my lunchboxes.

The counter top on the left is where I make my bentos in the morning. Putting my tools beside it will make it easier for me to reach them. Hmmp! I am quite pleased with my organisation skills!

Bento #24, #25 and #26

I made 3 DIFFERENT bentos this morning. Gosh, 连我都佩服我自己!FWAH!!

My mom fried the most yummy pork chop last evening for dinner. She saved 4 pcs for me to pack my bentos. The pork chops were inside my bento #24-#26!

Bento #24: My breakfast. The bread was very lousily cut. I hope it'll turn out better with the help of a scalpel. Hmmm.... the right most girl looks like the masked killer from the movie "Scream" but she was NOT, and was NOT intended to look like one, ok?

I am sure many have seen this picture: Do you see an old hag or a young lady?

Ok. How about this one? Do you see a car or a face in my Bento #25?

Last but not least, the simple bento #26 was my lunch.

Bento #23

Bento #23 is very similar to #22. What to do? I need to finish the loaf of bread, the butterhead and the ham, mah.

Because I bought a large packet of ham (which I will not do so in the future), I need to think of ways and means to finish them before they turn bad.

2 nights ago, After I made Jaimie's supper, I rolled up the ham, fried egg yolk and egg white off cuts and shove them into Clement's mouth like how I would shove the rubbish down the rubbish chute. To my surprise, Clement said the ham roll tasted delicious. Huh! Ok! So I made some egg yolk and egg white omelette, cut them into thin slices, added in some butterhead and used a food pick to fasten them together. Hmmmm.... I am quite pleased with the colour combination of the ham roll.

亲子面包 3

Err.. I mentioned that I ordered something which I do not know what it was during my previous trip to the Chinatown Point Hello Kitty Shop. I got it last Friday. So it was a shape cutter which could be used to cut out Hello Kitty and whatever the name of her bunny friend is. *sheepish look*

Jaimie asked for bread as supper and I thought it was a good chance for me to try out my new equipment. I fried the egg white and the egg yolk separately to make the face for the kitty and the bunny respectively. Tip: use low fire. My kitty's face nearly got freckles.

Finally, I made a Hello Kitty face that looked like Hello Kitty. *party poppers* *wolf whistles* *confeties falling from the sky*
Here's the yellow bunny. I put a drop of mayo on the flower because I was lazy to cut out cheese. Hey.. I realised I could have used the off cuts from Kitty's face! Oh well, next time, then.
Jaimie requested for kaya bread. The fish shaped cutter was just nice for cutting the bread as it would make the bread the right size for Jae to pop them in her little mouth.
As usual, when Jaimie saw the plate offered to her, she exclaimed "WOW", which made me very contended and happy. She finished up everything on her plate, which makes me even happier. Instantly lifted my PMS mood!

Bento #22

I had no intention to make bento today but it ended up to be quite a nice bento!

The alarm clock went off at 5.20am as usual but I only managed to drag myself out of bed at 6.10am. I needed a sandwich for lunch so I toasted 3 slices of honey and oat bread, washed some butterhead, heated up 2 slices of ham, opened a can of mayo tuna, brought out my olive oil spread from the fridge and thought that's it! A simple lunch, since I would be jogging in the early afternoon.

Then I cut the sandwich into halves. Hmmm... quite boring to just pack in the sandwiches. So I washed some honey tomatoes and cut a golden kiwi to put inside. Opps! Cannot fit the other half of the sandwich! How?? So the other half of the sandwich was simply put in a sandwich bag. That was breakfast. The items in the lunchbox would be lunch then.

I am quite happy with this bento. It feels healthy, nutritious and light.

I have read about how nice golden kiwi tasted from Meekfreek's and Absolutfaith's blog. Since NTUC was having a discount on golden kiwi, I bought some to try. There is no turning back now. No way I am going to buy anymore green kiwi. Ever.

Bento #21

Bento #21 is basically made so that I can clear my fridge. I tried pan-fried teriyaki salmon. Hmmm.. basically it is ok but it was a pity that I could not pack the sauce into the bento. Oil was splatting all over the kitchen when I was pan frying the fish and I do not think it taste much better than oven baked ones. So I think I will bake it instead of pan-frying salmon in the future. Saves me time too.

I so love my nori punchers! I have tried out the black puncher which didn't work successfully last time. Today it works fine, so it must be my seaweed the last time.

Oh.. please check out the different hairstyles on the origini. I am practising on the seaweed so that I can do a better job on Jaimie's hair next time.

Bento Making AAR II

I have done my first review after completing 10 bentos. And since I have progessed to Bento #20, it's time to do my second After Action Review.

Let's revisit the follow up actions to be done:
(1) Cutting down of food packed in bento. Purchase of smaller lunchboxes. CHECK.
(2) Buy more bento books. CHECK.
(3) Craft lessons. KIV.
(4) Bento tools. CHECK.

Hey! No bad! I acheived what I need to achieve! Now let's see whatelse I can do.

Areas of Concern at AAR II:
1) Spending too much time in the kitchen in the morning
2) Buying faster than I can eat/ use
3) Too much sodium in the bentos.
4) Craft lesson needed. For the asthetic part of bento-making, I hv a lot of room for improvement.

Follow up actions:
1) ... I guess I have to live with the situation. I am already very fast in cooking and washing and multitasking. Sometimes I have the oven, the stove and the microwave working at the same time!
2) If it is buying of none-perishable items like lunchboxes, it is acceptable (gulp!). For perishable items like veggi, do not buy more than 3 bentos' supply.
3) Must find substitute for bacons and hams and sausages although we love to eat them!
4) Errr... MORE bento tools and boxes? Visit other bento-ing momies' blogs more often to learn the tricks.

Next review date: Bento #40.

Bento #20

Horray! Thanks to my nori punchers, I can now make cute originis! However, only 2 out of 3 punchers are working fine. I need to try out the black puncher again to see what's wrong. The features seem to be stuck inside the puncher. Maybe it's my seaweed? Hmmm...

Clement woke up at 5.30am to help me with the bentos. He helped me cut the "hair" for the onigiri people. All the bacon tore into half when I tried to pull them out from their packaging. Urrrgghhh~~ that's why I could not wrap the cherry tomatoes properly!

This is my breakfast and lunch. Plus a kiwi fruit and a whole packet of lady's finger. I have to finish them before they rot! I bought them one week ago!

Clement's bento. He smsed me for permission to not eat the lady's fingers.... =_=

These 2 bentos for my 2 best friends in school. Happypig is still on her dieting plan and I keep spoiling her plan. Sorry pal. I overcooked, that's why. You got to help me until I am better at estimating the amt to cook.

Bento #19

Thank you, my friends, for your advices. I managed to copy out all my photos in my old laptop before it was totally gone. Phew~~~heng ah~~

I made an easy bento this morning. Sweet peas, carrots (my carrots were too skinny to be cut into any shape. Tip: buy big fat carrots if you want to cut them into nice shapes), omelette, vegetarian bittergourd yongtaofu (I still have 12 pcs in my freezer!) and honey glazed prok ribs from BBQ Express.
Mine's a mess, as usual. Because I need to pack whatever is leftover into my lunchbox. I can't possibily throw them away, right?
I was hoping by wrapping the bento with this bento-box cloth, it will look more like a bento. Hmmm.. what do you think? Where to get the cloth? Daiso!
This is extremely exciting!! My nori punchers are FINALLY here!! *whistle* They are quite heavy in weight and they definitely look very easy to use and durable. and perhaps easy to punch too. I haven't tried them. Maybe Monday I'll make onigiri with nori features! Where to get them? Jbox.com. cost: US$26.50 inclusive of shipping.

Bento #18

My personal laptop died last night. There goes all my photos. Sob Sob Sob.

With a broken heart, I made these 3 bentos this morning. The theme: GARDEN. Under the mushrooms was a piece of vegetarian bittergourd yongtaofu which symbolise my laptop buried 6 feet under.

Dear Lappy, may you rest in peace. :(

Bento #17

First day of school after a week's break.

Low morale.

Only thing that perks me up: Making Bento!!

Menu for day one of the academic term 4: crepe roll with sushi rice, inari, imitate crab stick and japanese cucumber. The taste is good but I need to work on my rolling skills and i need to put less of each ingredient into the roll so that it can roll better.

Shopaholic Mama II

Meekfreek, the rising Bento Master, sent me messages and pictures on her purchase in Chinatown Point yesterday.

Die.

Die die must go today.

Burnt another hole in my pocket but I am so happy with my purchase!

I have been eyeing on the Hello Kitty box for a long time. Meekfreek bought the Pooh face lunchbox. So cute and I must have one too.

This is my happiest find in the shop. Origini moulds complete with stencils for you to sprinkle nori powder or what have you. And 3 tiny boxes which I have yet to figure out what are they for. $29.90. Expensive but nice! And it comes in a box!

I placed an order for something. Erm, I do not know what it was. I think it has something to do with nori punching or something. Because I was asking the boss about nori punchers, she showed me something which somebody had ordered but yet to collect. I took a glance at the set of tools. It came with a tweezer. GREAT! I don't care what it's for. I need to have it! I'll blog about it when I collect it at a later date.
